Derek Iremonger

It is with great sadness that I have to make PFA members aware of the passing away of Derek, our Membership secretary and long-time expert in the Pomroy surname. Derek had been quietly battling cancer for some time, though when I last spoke to him a few weeks ago he was by his manner backing up his suggestion that he was responding very well. Indeed, we talked about how we planned to push our research forward in order to have something concrete and new to present at the 2016 reunion.

Derek’s funeral will take place this Friday, 24th October, in Cardiff, south Wales. The PFA has sent flowers, from all us, and passed on our condolences to his wife Sue and to his two daughters. We’ve also made a donation to the cancer centre that looked after Derek during this last year. If you wish to pass on a message to Derek’s family, please email me and I will collate them and pass them on in due course.

I had the privilege of working with Derek for many years. As a researcher he was both thorough and meticulous, the ideal combination to tackle the many questions that his independent analysis of our family history transcriptions threw up. He was also very gracious whenever, as he regularly needed to, his eye had been keener to make connections within the data and within families than my own. The traffic of ideas ran in both directions, but I often had the feeling that Derek was running both the signal box as well as the main line! I will miss him a great deal, and I hope we in some time are able to produce a record of our collective research that recognises all the work that he put into it. I am especially grateful that he took on, uncomplainingly, the time-consuming task of running the membership subscriptions in the UK and liaising with our overseas reps, a job that he did year after year with characteristic efficiency.

So, thank you, Derek, for everything you did for us, and shared with us.

Really sad to hear about Derek, I want to pass on my condolences to Sue. I met Derek and Sue several years ago when visiting the UK, Derek was so accommodating and both he and Sue made me feel very welcome when I visited. Unfortunately I did not know he had been diagnosed with cancer so I am quite surprised to hear of his passing.
